As the Network’s only model forest led by Aboriginal people, the Waswanipi Cree
Model Forest encourages Cree self-sufficiency. The Eeyou Istchee area is
maintained to ensure the cultural, economic and social development of the
Waswanipi community. The Model Forest encompasses 3.3 million hectares of
boreal forest in northern Québec and is located southeast of James Bay. The
forest’s dominant tree species are black spruce, tamarack and white spruce.
Waswanipi Cree Model Forest incorporates the traditional knowledge and culture
of the Cree people in the development of sustainable forest management
practices related to capacity development, community level indicators and
wildlife.
