The Nova Forest Alliance, covering 458,000 hectares in the Acadian Forest
Region of central Nova Scotia, is one of the Network’s newest Model Forests. It
extends from the city of Halifax in the east to the northern tip of the Bay of
Fundy. The forest’s dominant tree species are balsam fir, maple, red spruce and
yellow birch. Private woodlot owners manage approximately 57 percent of the
forest, which has encouraged the Nova Forest Alliance’s active participation in
the Woodlot Info Shop (WISH) and landowner education. The Model Forest also
participates in the PEI Model Forest Network Partnership, one of the Network’s special
project areas. Other project areas include hardwood management, natural
disturbance, watershed planning and wildlife.
