Lac-Saint-Jean
Model Forestunites three communities in a shared approach to diversifying the
Lac-Saint-Jean region’s forest environment economy.
The
Model
Forest
covers nearly 1.3 million hectares of boreal forest northwest of
Quebec
’s Lac Saint-Jean, an area traditionally shared by aboriginal trappers,
forest industry users, outfitters, and others. Creating the
Model
Forest
was in itself an example of cooperation as the communities of Mashteuiatsh,
Maria-Chapdelaine and Domaine-du-Roy united in their common goal of sustaining and
developing the local forest environment economy.
Community leaders are launching initiatives such as recovering forest
biomass, promoting non timber forest products, restoring unproductive forests, testing
new forest technologies, and seeking new opportunities in ecotourism in an effort
to revitalize the area’s forest communities and enhance socio-economic growth through
integrated forest management.
