International Model Forests
Forests do not stop at the Canadian border and neither does the Model Forest Network. More than a dozen countries have adopted this Canadian invention and have built Model Forests of their own. The International Model Forest Network (IMFN), established in 1995, is a voluntary association that links the world’s Model Forests.
The same innovative process that brings together diverse partners in Canada also works in other countries. What makes the Model Forest concept stand out from other forest-based initiatives is the comprehensiveness of the approach, its scale of operation, the breadth of policy that it can influence and the range of partners that it unites.
With more than 30 Model Forests in place or under development around the world, the IMFN continues to demonstrate success in finding innovative, low-cost, long-term solutions to the challenges facing advocates and practitioners of sustainable forest management.
To ensure the IMFN functions smoothly, an International Model Forest Network Secretariat operates under the guidance of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Ottawa, Canada.
Please visit the IMFN website to find out more about how the Model Forest concept is being adopted internationally.
